Abstract: This article examines the contemporary experience of work as a source of harm and our changing understanding of suffering. The bonds between work, subjectivity and suffering are presented around three milestones: 1) the evolution of the psychodynamics of work and its explanation of the impact of competition upon workers, a discipline developed in the heat of Christophe Dejours’ research and the exchange between psychopathology, sociology and philosophy; 2) the difficulties of interdisciplinary approaches to the phenomenon of suffering that have marked its reception in philosophy; 3) the disappearance of the idea of conflict in the adaptation to social imperatives, a central notion in the dialogue between critical theory and psychoanalysis, but absent in the evolution of psy knowledge and contemporary psychotherapeutic alternatives.
