Abstract: This article explores Adorno’s reflections on animality as a central motif in his critique of Enlightenment. Far from being a mere figure of otherness, animality appears in Adorno’s work as a repressed dimension of spirit that continuously resurfaces, exposing the limits of human self-understanding. Through a critical reconstruction of Adorno’s dialectic of spirit and nature, the article shows how the repression of animal resemblance shapes philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics. Particular attention is given to art and music as privileged spaces in which the memory of nature and … Continua a leggere

Abstract: This article revisits Hegel’s interpretation of Antigone in the Phenomenology of Spirit, engaging with contemporary readings – such as those of Judith Butler, Alenka Zupančič and others – to explore its enduring philosophical significance. It argues that the city, as conceptualized by Hegel, is founded upon a form of conflict and suffering that is both political and not quite political – a paradox rooted in the simultaneous inclusion and exclusion of the private sphere, traditionally associated with the feminine. Antigone’s act, as … Continua a leggere

Refusing violence and domination: Catherine Malabou and contemporary traumatisms

Abstract: In her investigation of plasticity and transformation, accident and trauma, collective suffering and insubordination, revolutionary and anarchist ideals, Catherine Malabou’s philosophical reflections remain an eloquent praise for resistance in the name of real equality between free people, a resolute opposition to social and political violence, showing the strategies of domination, exclusion and marginalisation still at work.

Hearing pain: Veena Das from anthropology toward philosophy

Abstract: We show how the work of an anthropologist like Veena Das focused on the violence suffered by vulnerable beings brings a new understanding of mass crimes thanks to the concepts of philosophers such as Wittgenstein and Cavell, whose work she ‘germinates’.

Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between intellectual discourse and subaltern speech through two political and theoretical experiences that emerged from the aftermath of May ’68: the militant work of the Prisons Information Group (1971-1972), and Jacques Rancière’s archaeological inquiry into workers’ speech in the 1970s. I argue that, although grounded in different methods – the enquête in the former, archive in the latter – both projects share a common commitment: affirming the right and capacity of subaltern subjects to speak for themselves, name … Continua a leggere

Expressing the pain of absence: Reflective issues raised by a survey on the intimate and sexual lives of prisoners’ partners conducted during the pandemic

Abstract: This article is based on a qualitative study on the intimate and sexual lives of partners of incarcerated individuals within heterosexual couples, conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. It aims to explore the reflexive challenges involved in gathering material related to a type of suffering that affects the couple – a social relationship of a particular nature, as it falls within the … Continua a leggere

Architecture as an aporia. For a magical overcoming of the impasse

Abstract: This contribution addresses the contemporary crisis within the context of current socio-environmental emergencies, questioning the ethical and political role of design and of the architect. While the city and urbanization are among the primary causes of global crises, designers are called upon to formulate sustainability strategies that often remain confined to technical and managerial solutions. These approaches, while engaging with issues such as inclusivity, participation, and environmental impact, tend not to challenge the economic and political … Continua a leggere

Abstract: The article examines the epistemic possibility of archives of social suffering within public archives and from an archivist’s perspective. Public archives are understood in their political reality, with their construction and preservation linked to the materiality of power and governance. Among the shelves of state records, the article focuses on the archives of the first French psychiatric hospital, which archives are taken as a whole system of production of meaning and not isolated sources. The approach is part of an epistemology of … Continua a leggere

From Red Eyes to Social Suffering. Contemporary Marks and Historical Reconfigurations of the Intolerable in Forced Child Mobilities since the 19th Century

Abstract: This article examines the bodily manifestations of social suffering among migrant children through a diachronic perspective (the late 19th century – present day). It draws on systematic archival research combined with ethnographic fieldwork conducted across four research programs, including two ANR-funded projects – OJEMIGR, on the impact of migration background on educational tracking in France, and MIJMA, on unaccompanied migrant children’s pathways in Italy and … Continua a leggere

Preservation as Self-Destruction: Updating a Critical Perspective from the Body and Work

Abstract: In Dialectic of Enlightenment, Adorno and Horkheimer analyze the self-negation of modernity’s normative content through an immanent framework: the pursuit of human freedom via absolute domination over nature generates conditions in which individual self-preservation manifests only as self-destruction. This article reassesses the enduring relevance of this framework – which might appear outdated amid the rise of neoliberal subjectivity and rationality – through the lens of contemporary forms of labor-related suffering. This approach yields … Continua a leggere

Abstract: This article examines the contemporary experience of work as a source of harm and our changing understanding of suffering. The bonds between work, subjectivity and suffering are presented around three milestones: 1) the evolution of the psychodynamics of work and its explanation of the impact of competition upon workers, a discipline developed in the heat of Christophe Dejours’ research and the exchange between psychopathology, sociology and philosophy; 2) the difficulties of interdisciplinary approaches to the phenomenon of suffering that have marked its reception in … Continua a leggere

Abstract: Starting with a summary of the main aspects of the debate between French social philosophy and psychodynamics of work, this article analyses the social dimension of suffering at work in relation to three specific aspects: the normative definition of the theory of suffering in psychodynamics of work and its connections with the dynamics of recognition; its psychosocial implications linked to the organisation of work in the form of “defence strategies” and “voluntary servitude”; the role … Continua a leggere

Abstract: This article argues that the concept of resentment is a useful category for understanding the relationship between social suffering, authoritarianism and the success of an ideal of freedom linked to the idea of harm. To this end, I will begin with an analysis of the concept of resentment that places special emphasis on the structural dimension of this affect. Secondly, I will address the fit of these resentful attachments in relation … Continua a leggere
