A Freedom to Harm: Social Suffering and Resentment in Times of Authoritarian Neoliberalism
Abstract: This article argues that the concept of resentment is a useful category for understanding the relationship between social suffering, authoritarianism and the success of an ideal of freedom linked to the idea of harm. To this end, I will begin with an analysis of the concept of resentment that places special emphasis on the structural dimension of this affect. Secondly, I will address the fit of these resentful attachments in relation to neoliberalism, the authoritarian response to its crises and the link between the type of subjectivity, the problem of social suffering and freedom.
Keywords: Neoliberalism; Resentment; Social suffering; Neoliberal subjectivity; Freedom.
