Suffering and recognition in psychodynamics of work: foundations and new perspectives

Abstract: Starting with a summary of the main aspects of the debate between French social philosophy and psychodynamics of work, this article analyses the social dimension of suffering at work in relation to three specific aspects: the normative definition of the theory of suffering in psychodynamics of work and its connections with the dynamics of recognition; its psychosocial implications linked to the organisation of work in the form of “defence strategies” and “voluntary servitude”; the role of social recognition in Souffrance en France based on the norme of “virility” in overcoming a specific pathological suffering (“ethical suffering”). Our objective is to offer an introduction to the fundamentals of this discipline and to contribute to the development of a social philosophy of recognition which takes full account of the critical relevance of the concept of recognition in analysing the dynamics of domination arising from working relationships in the era of neoliberalism.

Keywords: Social suffering at work; Recognition; Psychodynamics of work; Neoliberalism; Virility.
