The recognition of the sexes in Hegel’s philosophy

Abstract: This article reconstructs Hegel’s theory of recognition, taking the relationship between the sexes as its guiding thread. It aims to defend four theses: : (1) romantic relationships between men and women were a privileged experience for the young Hegel in the development of his theory of recognition; (2) through love, recognition between the sexes constitutes a singular and essential form of recognition; (3) this romantic recognition between the sexes has a historical dimension; (4) it is precisely this … Continua a leggere

The stakes of recognition: feminist genealogies

Abstract: This article explores the concept of recognition through a feminist genealogical lens, positioning Mary Wollstonecraft as a foundational figure in rethinking subjectivity, autonomy, and justice. While philosophical debates on recognition often begin with Hegel’s dialectic of the master and the slave, Wollstonecraft’s thought anticipates a relational and moral framework that challenges both individualist and hierarchical models. Her conception of virtue as modesty, her critique of dependence, and her insistence on educational and civic freedom for women frame recognition … Continua a leggere

(Re)cognition and gathering of women according to Anna Wheeler and Concordia

Abstract: The aim of this article is to examine the link, in the work of two radical nineteenth-century philosophers, between the question of knowledge of women’s nature and that of their political subjectivation. This link can first be seen in Anna Wheeler’s address to women, the last chapter of the Appeal of One Half the Human Race, a work co-authored with William Thompson (1825). It is then at the heart … Continua a leggere

Non-recognition in Beauvoir: Consciousness and the Body for-the-other

Abstract: This article examines Simone de Beauvoir’s critical reworking of the theory of recognition and its implications for her conceptions of consciousness and the lived body. Beauvoir develops a theory of non-recognition that exposes the structural dynamics of relations of oppression and domination. From an existential and phenomenological perspective, she interrogates the lived and embodied experience of individuals who are denied social recognition as autonomous subjects – as beings for-themselves – and who are thereby relegated to a … Continua a leggere

Philosophy of Action, Abstraction, and Experience in Beauvoir and Fraser: A Comparative Materialist-Feminist Reading

Abstract: In this text, we will compare the philosophies of action of de Beauvoir and Fraser. Both philosophies are marked by a tendency to generalize the demands of specific categories of exploited/marginalized subjects. However, this generalization is politically effective and ethically sound only if it preserves and values difference, as de Beauvoir shows in her autobiographical writing.

Theories of social reproduction through the lens of recognition. The critical significance of recognition of reproductive work

Abstract: Theories of social reproduction, which emerged in the 1970s in the wake of the Wages for Housework movement, have undergone in recent years a process of renewal and broadening of scope. They articulate a demand for recognition, initially focused on domestic labor (but gradually extended to a broader range of reproductive activities) as well on women themselves as political subjects. This article seeks to examine the role of … Continua a leggere

Epistemic Injustice and Recognition

Abstract: Theories of recognition have developed without seeking to clarify their epistemological implications, while theories of epistemic injustice have developed without explicitly referring to philosophical approaches to recognition. But the similarities between these two types of theories are numerous enough to have attracted attention. This article begins by explaining why these similarities deserve to be taken seriously, before analyzing how each of the two types of theories can benefit from its comparison with the other.
