“Un principio schietto di etica comunistica”. Antonio Labriola lettore di Spinoza
Francesco Cerrato
Alma mater studiorum, Università di Bologna (francesco.cerrato@unibo.it; Orcid: 0000-0003-0858-3012).
Abstract: The article reconstructs Antonio Labriola’s relationship with Spinoza, showing how his early reflection on the passions in the Ethics influences his later adherence to historical materialism. Unlike Gentile and Spaventa, Labriola does not interpret Spinoza as a forerunner of Hegelianism, but as the founder of an ethical naturalism grounded in necessity. In The Origin and Nature of the Passions According to Spinoza’s Ethics (1866), he emphasizes the connection between knowledge, affectivity, and praxis, re-evaluating the geometrical order as a model of natural necessity. For … Continua a leggere

Robespierre a Mosca. Le 96 ore di un monumento e la memoria della Rivoluzione francese
Marco Fioravanti
Università degli studi di Tor Vergata (marco.fioravanti@uniroma2.it; Orcid: 0000- 0002-0020-3591).
Abstract: The text traces the construction and crisis of the memory of the French Revolution, taking as its starting point the ephemeral statue of Robespierre erected in Moscow in 1918. Through an analysis of Marx’s relationship with the Revolution, it shows how 1789, the Terror, and Napoleon served as ambivalent references in the formation of socialist thought. The essay then reconstructs the evolution of revolutionary historiography from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, focusing on figures such as Jaurès, Mathiez, and Soboul, and highlighting … Continua a leggere

Come uscire dai dilemmi del razionalismo moderno? Il giudizio su Descartes di Borkenau e Hegel
Giorgio Cesarale
Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia (giorgio.cesarale@unive.it).
Abstract: This paper addresses a crucial question of modern rationalism: the relationship between finitude and infinity. Reiterated across multiple dimensions – ranging from the problem of infinity itself to the tension between freedom and necessity, and between the ideas of the true and of the good – this polarity profoundly shapes the very conditions of possibility of modern subjectivity. Drawing on Borkenau’s reading of Descartes, the paper first examines this philosophical issue against the background of the transformation of the capitalist mode of production, from manufacture to machinery. Through … Continua a leggere

Politica storia teoria: Antonio Gramsci lettore di Machiavelli
Fabio Frosini
Università degli Studi di Urbino (fabio.frosini@uniurb.it; Orcid: 0000000249772314)
Abstract: The article reconstructs Antonio Gramsci’s evolving engagement with Niccolò Machiavelli, from his early writings to the Prison Notebooks. As early as 1917, Gramsci framed Machiavelli as a critical alternative to Italian cultural fragmentation, juxtaposing him against the “stenterellesque” bourgeoisie. In the Prison Notebooks, he advances a radical reinterpretation of Machiavellian thought, portraying The Prince as a political project aimed at establishing a bourgeois national state through an urban-rural alliance. He casts Machiavelli as a “jacobin” ante litteram and a forerunner of a “philosophy of praxis” grounded … Continua a leggere

Dentro e contro il Leviatano: Mario Tronti nel laboratorio della prima rivoluzione inglese
Damiano Palano
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (damiano.palano@unicatt.it; Orcid: 0000- 0002-6561-9272).
Abstract: The text reconstructs Mario Tronti’s theoretical elaboration of the idea of the autonomy of the political, beginning with the crisis of operaismo in the 1960s. Through engagement with the first English Revolution, with Hobbes and Cromwell, Tronti rereads the formation of the modern state as the driver of the transition to capitalism, anticipating economic processes and configuring itself as an autonomous machine of power. Hobbes’s negative anthropology and political realism become tools for envisioning a “working-class Realpolitik” capable of governing capital without reproducing its presuppositions. … Continua a leggere

Anarchismo tra classicità e modernità
Salvo Vaccaro
Università degli Studi di Palermo (salvo.vaccaro(at)unipa.it; orcid: 0000-0002-2244- 3836).
Abstract: The article analyzes anarchist thought as a constitutive negation of the archē, understood both as a political principle and as an ontological foundation. Starting from Catherine Malabou’s observation on the paradox of contemporary anarchism, the author traces the origin of the tension between the negation of authority and the possibility of a non-hierarchical social order back to classical Greek antiquity (Herodotus, Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle). Modern anarchism, which emerged in the context of Enlightenment critique, is characterized by the joint articulation of liberty and … Continua a leggere

Il marxismo e Kant
Stefano Petrucciani
Università degli Studi di Roma, “La Sapienza” (stefano.petrucciani@uniroma1.it; orcid: 0000-0002-4283-2396).
Abstract: The article reconstructs the complex intertwining between Marxism and Kantian philosophy. After an initial phase in which Marx, following Hegel, criticizes Kantian moral formalism, late nineteenth-century attempts at reconciliation emerge, as in the neo-Kantian socialism of Bernstein, Vorländer, and Adler, who emphasize the categorical imperative and the communal dimension of conscience. In the early twentieth century, Lenin reads Kant as an intermediate position between materialism and idealism, though criticizing the unknowability of the thing-in-itself. Later, Lukács interprets Kant as a stage in overcoming the … Continua a leggere

Calibano, la strega, il corpo sociale: Storia, soggetti e storie
Federica Giardini
Università di Roma-Tre (federica.giardini@uniroma3.it; Orcid: 0000-0002-6804- 0960)
Abstract: The article provides a comparative analysis of Silvia Federici’s Il grande Calibano and Caliban and the Witch, tracing their theoretical-political development. Its central theme is the political deployment of history to foreground invisibilized subjectivities: the rebellious social body and the witch. Utilizing the category of social reproduction, Federici critiques orthodox Marxist historiography and reasserts a genealogical approach to primitive accumulation, reconceptualized as a recursive global process. This theoretical development is interwoven with cycles of feminist, workers’, and anti-structural adjustment movements, articulating an intersectional analysis of exploitation … Continua a leggere

Un concetto di desiderio: il ritorno a Cartesio di Alain Badiou
Oliver Feltham
American University of Paris (ofeltham@aup.edu; Orcid: 0000-0001-8946-2014).
Abstract: The article analyzes the concept of the subject in Alain Badiou, beginning with his rereading of Descartes through Lacan. In the final meditation of Being and Event, Badiou reconstructs the subject as a finite fragment within an infinite praxis of truth, distinct both from the classical self-transparent subject and from the Lacanian subject still correlated with an object. Through his critique of the Cartesian “suture” of the symbolic order, Badiou argues that there is no unified “Big Other”. The subject instead emerges as a performative effect … Continua a leggere

Marxismo-leninismo nero. Modernità, autonomia e rivoluzione secondo C.L.R James
Miguel Mellino
Università degli Studi di Napoli “L’Orientale” (miguel.mellino@gmail.com; Orcid: 0000-0002-1405-7986).
Abstract: The article reconstructs the Marxism-Leninism of C.L.R. James, highlighting its specific historical and political features. Though rooted in the Marxist tradition, James develops an autonomous conception of modernity as a product of global social struggles, rejecting both vanguardism and abstract universalism. Through a trajectory that extends from 1930s anti-colonial Pan-Africanism to activism in the United States and the break with Trotskyism, James elaborates an idea of organization based on mass autonomy and grassroots council practices. In his militant writings from the 1950s and 1960s (Facing … Continua a leggere

Sugli usi ‘marxisti’ di Spinoza – Lezioni di metodo
André Tosel
Abstract: This text by André Tosel, “On the ‘Marxist’ Uses of Spinoza – Lessons of Method,” originally published in O. Bloch (ed.), Spinoza au XXe siècle, Presses Universitaires de France, Paris 1993, investigates the multiple and contradictory uses of Spinozism within the Marxist tradition. Tosel distinguishes between the orthodox use – from Plekhanov to Soviet philosophers – which interprets Spinoza as the founder of a monistic materialism functional to the construction of a partisan worldview, and the critical use, inaugurated by Antonio Labriola and revived by Louis Althusser, which values Spinoza as a tool … Continua a leggere

Problemi di storia dello stato moderno Francia: 1610-1650
Antonio Negri
Abstract: This text by Antonio Negri, published in Rivista di storia della filosofia, vol. 22, no. 2 (April–June 1967), analyzes the formation of the modern state, beginning with the case of France between 1610 and 1650. Reviving Federico Chabod’s notion of the “state as machine,” Negri interprets absolutism as the outcome of the crisis of Renaissance humanism and the political defeat of the bourgeoisie, which, though socially hegemonic, was separated from the state. Through the examination of libertinism, Jansenism, and Cartesian philosophy, the article identifies the main ideological configurations that define the relationship between civil society … Continua a leggere

Freud e la psicologia delle masse oggi: psicoanalisi, politica e populismo nell’era della post-verità
Yannis Savrakakis
School of Political Sciences, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece (yanstavr@yahoo.co.uk; ORCID: 0000-0002-5682-7547).
Abstract: 2021 marks one century from the first publication of Mass Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego by Sigmund Freud. What has been the importance of this text for social and political inquiry diachronically? What is its relevance today? It is to these two questions that this text is devoted. Attention is first given to the broader choreography between psychoanalysis and socio-political inquiry. Focus is then directed to the way populism research in particular has benefited from the ensuing re-orientation. Debates … Continua a leggere

Populismo e post-verità. Oltre le affinità elettive
Matteo De Toffoli
Università degli Studi di Milano (matteo.detoffoli@unimi.it; OrCID: 0000- 0002-8696-0533).
Abstract: This article critically examines the alleged elective affinity between two widely employed terms in philosophy and social sciences: “populism” and “post-truth”. Although these concepts are often treated as near-synonyms, this study argues that their affinity or convergence is not inherent in the concepts themselves, but contingent on the specific conceptualizations developed over their history. Populism, despite its long and complex evolution, has acquired a predominantly negative connotation within the mid-20th-century pluralist canon, which framed it as a form of pathological otherness to democracy. … Continua a leggere

Quale scienza per quale popolo? L’esperienza del Comitato Tecnico Scientifico Popolare di Seveso (1976-1978)
Sara De Toni
Università di Roma La Sapienza (sara.detoni@uniroma1.it; ORCID: 0009-0006- 7075-0896).
Abstract: This contribution aims to explore the concepts of “popular science” through the historical experience of the Popular Technical-Scientific Committee (CTSP), established in the aftermath of the Icmesa disaster in Meda-Seveso on July 10, 1976. At the core of this analysis are the notions of the non-neutrality of science and the regime of truth: the former refers to the structural and social conditions shaping the production of scientific knowledge within capitalist societies, highlighting how science is embedded in material relations and historical determinations; … Continua a leggere

Il rifiuto della delega. Gruppi omogenei, validazione consensuale e contestazione del sapere esperto
Gianluca Pozzoni
Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (gianluca.pozzoni@unimib.it; ORCID: 0000- 0002-5304-2824).
Abstract: This article critically engages with contemporary debates on “medical populism” and the opposition between expert authority and popular irrationalism, arguing that such dichotomies obscure alternative modes of articulating expertise, power, and participation from below. The article reconstructs a historically situated form of bottom-up contestation of expert knowledge in the field of occupational health, focusing on the Italian workers’ movement of the 1960s and, in particular, on the principle of “non-delegation” in matters of workplace health and safety. Central to this experience was the idea that … Continua a leggere

Globalizzazione e promesse, non mantenute, di diffusione del benessere e della democrazia nel mondo intero
Michele Blanco
Ricercatore indipendente (micheleblanco26@yahoo.it; ORCID: 0009-0003-5162- 8551).
Abstract: The constant and continuous affirmation of the absolutely free movement of capital, with economically powerful multinational companies and large economic unions between nation states, is interpreted as signs of a globalization that has surpassed the classic form of the nation state to move towards a global governance without borders and without conflicts. This idea has gained ground, thanks in part to strong propaganda in the mass media, making grand promises of economic prosperity for all, of freedom and democracy, with the simultaneous realization of the free movement of … Continua a leggere

La notion de « système » en 1750 : Le Discours préliminaire et l’Abrégé des systèmes de La Mettrie
Theo Verbeek
Université d’Utrecht (t.h.m.verbeek@uu.nl).
Abstract: La Mettrie’s ‘Preliminary discourse,’ nominally the introduction to the first collective edition of his philosophical works (1751), on one hand serves as a way to present the ideas on morality developed earlier in the introduction to his translation of Seneca’s ‘De vita beata’ (1748), but on the other hand also to complete it with the thesis that philosophy has no influence on the actions of ordinary people. The purely speculative nature of philosophy is further illustrated in La Mettrie’s Abrégé des systèmes (‘Short summary of philosophical systems’), a work first published … Continua a leggere
