Continua a leggere

Philia e azione sociale. Da Aristotele a Hegel

Italo Testa

cezanneAbstract
:   In this paper I will show that Aristotle’s notion of philía is relevant to social and political  philosophy,  inasmuch as it contains an  analysis  of  the fundamental forms of interaction that institute the social bond – a reading that I will contrast with current interpretations of philía which focus on the theory of moral virtue and on the relation between philía and love.  I will then try to show that the Hegelian notion of “recognition” can be understood as a modern reconstruction of philía as a theory of social agency. In particular, the Hegelian notion of Continua a leggere

Rousseau e Hegel: due concetti di riconoscimento

Frederick Neuhouser

fr. revAbstract
: This paper investigates the subtle differences between Rousseau’s and Hegel’s concepts of recognition.  It argues that the most important difference lies in the way each conceives of the relation between recognition and freedom.  For Rousseau, relations of equal recognition as citizens constitute a necessary condition of (political) freedom, whereas for Hegel freedom (“being-with-oneself-in-the-other”) consists in satisfying forms of recognition.  The second half explicates this Hegelian conception of freedom and reveals further important differences between the concepts: a) for Hegel recognition is a practical, normative phenomenon that implies placing limits on one’s own will; b) Hegel Continua a leggere

Emmanuel Renault

downloadABSTRACT: Instead of trying to actualize a Hegel read through Mead’s eyes, exactly as Honneth has proposed to do it, this article proposes to contextualize Mead read through the lens of pragmatic Hegelianism developed by Dewey and Mead. Dewey elaborated the main ideas of his pragmatism not against Hegel but through his philosophy, and particularly during the phase of his collaboration with Mead in Chicago. The first part of this article focuses on the nature and the role of the connections to recognition in the Hegelian phase of Dewey and Mead’s pragmatism. The second part seeks to resituate Continua a leggere

La “breccia”. Tra Kafka ed Arendt

Mario Pezzella

Mario Tozzi - Idoli al sole estivoABSTRACT. The essay draws on Hannah Arendt’s comment on a “consideration” by F. Kafka entitled Er [He]. This is a reflection on the relationship between thought and experience of historical time. Arendt elaborated a theory of radical contingency, wherein the formulations of thought spring forth as a “diagonal” from the clash between the dimentions of the past and the future, creating a suspension, a moment of fluctuation in the flow of chronological time. In the essay, this formulation is placed in comparison with W. Benjamin’s conception of the dialectical image, including Benjamin’s essay on Kafka and the figure Continua a leggere

Spettri della rivoluzione. Badiou, Rancière e Žižek sulla creazione politica

Emanuele Profumi

pugniABSTRACT: There are several critical views in contemporary political philosophy, supposing – each one in a different way- the political creation as a form of human emancipation.Alan Badiou’s and Jacques Rancière’s positions are the most significant: on one hand, they try to back up the reality of politics as a creative reality, whereas, on the other hand, they do not succeed in linking it to a real revolutionary prospect, because of some problems rising around imaginary centers, related to the “political nothing” and to the “democratic truth”. As Slavoj Žižek has outlined Continua a leggere

Clotilde Leguil

Abstract: If the desire for recognition could have been considered by Lacan as crucial for the analytic experience understood as a dialectical process, it was destined to be overrun by the post-structuralist lesson of the Sixties. By the same time Lacan deploys a new orientation of psychoanalysis towards the real, he detaches himself from a desire for recognition that does not testify to the logic of the drive presiding over the symptom. I then show how Lacan moves from a dialectics of recognition to a dialectics of the drives, in which it is no longer a question of Continua a leggere

Le désir de se revancher. Descartes et la reconnaissance.

Philippe Drieux

ABSTRACT: The 193rd article of Descartes’ treatise Passions of the Soul is entitled “De la Reconnaissance” and it describes a passion whose nature has nothing to do with Hegel’s famous concept Anerkennung. This article deals much more with the gratefulness and love someone may feel for his/her benefactor than with what happens when two persons recognize each other’s status or value. There might be no link between the former feelings and the way someone can prove his/her own value and existence to other people. In this sense, “reconnaissance” is the exact opposite of ingratitude – one of the Continua a leggere

Morte o rinascita degli esercizi spirituali? Le Meditationes di Descartes nel dibattito tra Derrida/Foucault e Foucault/Hadot

                                                                             Massimiliano Biscuso

Abstract: Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot maintained that Descartes, in his Meditationes de prima philosophia, followed the ancient tradition of spiritual exercises. In this paper I will examine Foucault’s and Hadot’s theses, analyzing both the relation between Cartesian evidence and the Stoic conception of cataleptic representation, as well as the one between the Cartesian and Augustinian overcoming of doubt. In my opinion, the French philosopher changes the spiritual exercises of the ancient philosophers into a literary genre.

L’amicizia tra gelosia e gratitudine. Riconoscimento e virtù nell’«Etica» di B. Spinoza.

Francesco Toto

Abstract: Drawing on Baruch Spinoza’s analyses of jealousy and gratitude this article demonstrates the importance of friendship in his Ethics. Friendship is shown to be crucial both for those driven by reason and for those dominated by emotions. This article also shows the significance of the desire for recognition in the genesis of friendship itself. My emphasis on the notion of friendship addresses a gap in Spinozian studies and it produces a new reading of the problem of continuity/discontinuity between passion and virtue. Through this analysis the possibility of an affective agreement among men emerges Continua a leggere

La reconnaissance chez Hutcheson.

Laetitia De Rohan Chabot

Abstract: In his early philosophy, Hutcheson essentially wonders about the principles of our moral approbation, thereby putting a theory of acknowledgement at the center of his philosophy. Acknowledgement seems to be both epistemic and emotional, insofar as it refers to the spectator’s capacity to identify virtue in the agent and to approve it without the help of any previous rational knowledge. Nevertheless, Hutcheson’s thinking gets more complicated when in the Inquiry into the original of our ideas of beauty and virtue, section III, he comes to consider the action’s potential effects, which the moral sense cannot Continua a leggere

Luigi Delia

Abstract: Between Montesquieu and Beccaria, the Diderot and D’Alembert Encyclopédie system proves to be a privileged site through which it is possible to remap both the judicial and socio-political stakes of the duel. What kind of logic presides over the ancient jurisprudence of judicial combat? Is God’s judgement a criterion for truth? Must we punish with infamy those gentlemen who (have) confronted each other in the name of aristocratic honor, self-esteem and notoriety?Continua a leggere

La lezione kantiana sulla “Psychologie”

Elisabetta Mainenti

.

kantABSTRACT. It is widely recognized that Leibniz’s basic understanding of the mind (as a combination of consciousness and unconsciousness) gave birth to a tradition destined to affect the entire evolution of German psychology until Freud. The proposal of the possible existence of unconscious mental processes was in complete contradiction with the dominant perspective. However, following Kant’s suggestions about the articulated and complex architecture of the soul contained in his Lectures on Psychology, it can be argued that, paradoxically, it is precisely the ‘Eponymous hero’ of the ‘Enlightened Era’ that gives us a Continua a leggere

Continua a leggere

Parole che contano: vulnerabilità, narratività e obbligazione in Judith Butler

Cristian Lo Iacono

ABSTRACT. Alex Honneth and Charles Taylor have sustained that recognition provides the foreground for an integral and authentic self, while misrecognition impedes it. Judith Butler contends that preexisting frames of intelligibility determine who is worth receiving recognition a who is not. Having this frame in mind we can better understand the project of a non-violent ethics of vulnerability and narrativity Butler has developed in her latest works. I analyze both arguments and explain some of their relation with philosophy and feminism. I argue, in particular, that the concept of moral obligation which can Continua a leggere

 Alessandra Campo

Abstract: This article deals with the concepts of recognition in the work of philosopher Judith Butler and psychoanalyst Jessica Benjamin. They both offer interpretations of the famous fourth section of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, and although these two readings raise questions on the same topics, they make use of different conceptual frameworks and achieve heterogeneous results. In particular, this article shows the incapacity of their positions to fully convey, within the notion of recognition, the articulation of an intersubjective/horizontal dimension and an infrasubjective/vertical one. Like those philosophers identified with “negative thought”, Butler and Benjamin draw almost exclusively Continua a leggere

“Questa testa di Medusa dentro”. Politiche della delegittimazione ne ‘Il dissidio’ di J.-F. Lyotard

Sergio Alloggio

Abstract: This article constitutes the second part of the essay “‘This head of Medusa within’: Politics of delegitimation in Jean-François Lyotard’s The Differend”, the first part of which was published in «Consecutio Temporum», no. 3, 2012. I begin by investigating Lyotard’s organic approach to Kant and argue that from the Critique of Pure Reason to Kant’s political works, Lyotard’s reading is wrought through the phrasal dispositif which illuminates how a politics of delegitimation takes place between Lyotard and Kant. Within Lyotard’s reading of Hegel the phrasal dispositif is made to engage with its inverted Continua a leggere
